3-5 Curriculum Standards

Standard 1:

Accesses information efficiently and effectively to inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge or information.
* Formulates questions based on information needs.
* Identifies a variety of potential sources of information.
* Develops and uses successful strategies for locating information.
* Seeks information from diverse sources, contexts, disciplines and cultures.

*Explains an information need. 1. Asks a question about finding a book or locating information in a print or nonprint source. 1.A. 2a Read and comprehend unfamiliar words using root words, synonyms, antonyms, word origins and derivations. 1.1.2 Use prior and background knowledge as content for new learning.
*Understands the concept of keywords. 2. Begins to use print and/or nonprint dictionary, encyclopedia, atlas. 1.A.2b Clarify word meaning using context clues and a variety of resources including glossaries, dictionaries and thesauruses. 1.1.3 Develop and refine a range of questions to frame the search for new understanding.
3. Begins to use table of contents and index. 1.B.2a Establish purposes fr reading, survey materials, ask questions, make predictions, connect, clarify and extend ideas. 1.1.4 Find evaluate, and select appropriate sources to answer questions.
4. Identifies author, title, title page, illustrator, cover, spine, publisher, copyright date of print and/or non-print resources. 1.B.2b Identify structure (e.g. description, compare/contrast, cause and effect, sequence) of nonfiction texts to improve comprehension. 1.1.6 Read, view, and listen for information presented in any format (e.g., textual, visual, media, digital) in order to make inferences and gather meaning).
5. Begins to determine possible print and /or nonprint resources and select the most appropriate. 1.B.2c Continuously check and clarify for understanding (e.g., in addition to previous skills, clarify terminology, seek additional information). 1.1.8 Demonstrate mastery of technology tools for accessing information and pursuing inquiry.

Standard 2:

Evaluates information critically and competently to draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge.
* Determines accuracy, relevance, and comprehensiveness.

* Selects information appropriate to the problem or question at hand.

Uses headings, subheadings, table of contents, index. 1.A.2b Clarify word meaning using context clues and a variety of resources including glossaries, dictionaries and thesauruses. 2.1.1 Continue an inquiry-based research process by applying critical thinking skills (analysis, synthesis, evaluation, organization) to information and knowledge in order to construct new understandings, draw conclusions and create new knowledge.
*Identifies facts and details that support main ideas. 2. Learns beginning note-taking skills. 1.B.2b Identify structure (e.g., description, compare/contrast, cause and effect, sequence) of nonfiction texts to improve comprehension. 2.1.2 Organize knowledge so that it is useful.

Standard 3:

Uses information accurately, creatively, and ethically to share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as a member of our democratic society.

* Devises strategies for revising and improving process and product.
* Practices ethical behavior in regard to information and information technology (including freedom of speech, censorship, copyright and plagiarism.
